The World Might Be Flat After All

CES 2011
A review by Logan Enright

This writer thinks it’s possible there will never be flying cars. Every sci-fi writer from Jules Verne through Ray Bradbury and Rod Serling has referenced them for over one hundred years. None of those visionaries considered the astonishingly simple reality upon us now: everything you can think of can be accessed instantly through flat panel devices of all sizes.

Visionary Solutions, Inc - IPTV Encoders Appoints Enright Company

Visionary Solutions, Inc., www.vsicam.com, with US headquarters in Santa Barbara and founded in 1995, has appointed The Enright Company as their manufacturers’ reps. VSI manufactures video over IP technology, including high definition (HD) h.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC) encoders, and standard definition MPEG-2 and h.264 encoders. This allows one to turn almost any video source (Composite, SVideo, Component, HDMI, or SDI) into full-screen, full resolution, Internet Protocol digital video in real time.

VSI encoders provide HD and SD audio/video quality that rivals competitive broadcast equipment costing up to five times more. Depending on the product, our encoders can provide from 100 kilobits per second (kbps) to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) total stream bit rates, accommodating everything from Internet transmissions to the highest quality HD demands.

Visionary Solutions Hardware and software solutions are sold in the following markets: Professional AV (University, K12, Corporate Campus, Government), PCO (Private Cable Operator), Television/Broadcast (feeds, backhaul, monitoring), Telecommunications (ISPs, Telcos, Cable Co.) and High-End Video Surveillance.

VSI customers are using our products for broadcast and cable television feeds, building-wide TV distribution systems, conference center AV, university or special event webcasts, multicasts and podcasts, digital signage networks, educational and corporate TV, security, videoconferencing and telemedicine.

The latest encoder from VSI is the AVN441HD. It encodes high definition video in an h.264 stream (MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC) and is housed in a Media Processing Platform (MPP), a high density rack mount system. Plug a video source directly into the blade, plug into the network via the RJ-45 connection and stream real-time high definition video over your LAN or WAN. The MPP, with AVN441HD blades, is suitable for all applications requiring cost-effective, low bit rate, high definition video distribution over IP networks.

Superior Audio/Video Quality

h.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC) hardware compression and Visionary Solutions’ optimized transmission technology provides a high definition, full frame rate IP video stream. The stream can be viewed by an unlimited number of clients on a LAN or WAN, provided that bandwidth is available. Image resolutions are configurable to 720p or 1080i at 50 or 60 frames per second (fps) or 1080p at 24 fps. The video bit rate can be configured from 4 to 18 Mbps. The audio compression is either AAC (128 to 512 kbps audio encoding) or MPEG-1 Layer 2 (64 to 384 kbps audio encoding) with up to 48 kHz sample rate.

VSI (www.vsicam.com) works hard to provide superior value and is proud of the “cost to performance” return of its IPTV solutions.

Hall Research Develops Real-Time Embedded Control for Most AV Equipment

Modern appliances and electronic devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Advanced feature sets require advanced configuration options. Multi level menu systems offer more granular control to the users but at the cost of usability. Unfortunately, most user interfaces are not advanced enough to solve the usability issues and therefore the interface actually becomes the weak link.

Physical interfaces such as button panels or remote controls have many disadvantages. Panel controls require a dedicated display for feedback and physical access to a fixed location. IR remote controls offer only one-way communication with limited feedback and can become difficult to manage for multiple devices.

Many different 3rd party control systems are available to develop fully customizable user interfaces for controlling multiple types of devices. These control systems are essentially software development platforms which provide a very high level of customization and development options. However, the highly technical nature of these platforms makes it cost prohibitive to implement in many situations.

We propose a new type of solution to address these issues and bring simplified management and control to a broader market through embedded virtual control interfaces.
